Early detection of Prostate Cancer means a better chance of cure

With more than a million cases reported every year, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. Affecting the prostate gland, the cancer can become painful and potentially deadly. Early detection, however, increases the chance of a cure.

For instance, in the case of 58-year-old Mr. Ashok Kumar Mukherjee, he was diagnosed with localised prostate cancer after he approached Rabindranath Tagore International Institute Of Cardiac Sciences and complained of high urinary frequency and poor flow. Clinical Examination revealed a prostate gland enlargement with a hard nodule on left low of the prostate gland. He underwent further investigations like blood PSA and an MRI which confirmed the early stages of prostate cancer.

The team advised Mr. Mukherjee to undergo radical prostatectomy which would remove the gland and the cancer, with it. The surgery was successful and Mr. Mukherjee now leads a normal life, has returned to his government job and has remained cancer free for over two years.

Doctors stress that the early detection was key to the cure and advice any man over the age of 50 should undergo a prostate screening exam to ensure that the cancer is caught early. Narayana Health’s check-up plans offer comprehensive health checks including ones for cancer and opting for one could be the difference between an early cure or a long struggle.
